Mixed experience - not a great family option

Gingermegs79 TripAdvisor review

This is a difficult review to write as our experience was mixed. However, the mainly positive reviews do not reflect our experience. The first point is I am not writing this through the ALL hotel-provided link with a cross-post to TA as I usually do because despite being ALL gold, the hotel did not provide a review link after check out (I have waited almost 2 weeks). Before our stay, I communicated with the hotel about our room requests and access to the Club Lounge. We booked a "Family memories" package, so there was no indication that the hotel was not suitable for us (children aged 10 and 12). But when we arrived we found that this wasn't the case. The good aspects were the location was great, the style is lovely, the rooms were as shown on the website although ours did not have a good view, and the gym was well equipped and spacious. The food in the Club Lounge was ok for breakfast and evening drinks - we did have better experiences at other properties during our trip. The lounge had great views but wasn't well set up for parties of 4 with only tables of 2 or a single large table. Our breakfast in the main restaurant one day was also good with an expansive buffet and great service. The coffee was better at the main restaurant and included the option of Salt coffee which was not available in the Club Lounge. For a couple or solo trip I think this hotel works well but I would not recommend it for a family stay. Apparently, the hotel hosts a "bottomless brunch" with 6 hours of free-flow alcohol on Sunday, and then the people attending head up to the rooftop pool bar afterwards. So, when we arrived on a Sunday, we went to the rooftop pool to cool off and found it full, with no shade and no seating available. Nonetheless, we went for a swim, enjoyed the views and ordered some drinks at the edge of the pool to celebrate the last stop of a lovely trip. Unfortunately, it went downhill rapidly when a very drunk man who had vomited over himself was stumbling towards the lift with the bar staff supporting him. My youngest daughter was asking what had happened and was distressed and asked to leave the pool. We agreed and said he had gone, we would hop out and dry off, look at the glass bridge and head down in a few minutes. We looked at the bridge (a flight of stairs above the pool) and turned around to find my daughter distraught saying "there's another one" as there was another very drunk man staggering around the pool area. Again the staff supported him into the lift. We rapidly left with my daughter in tears and I spoke quickly to the bar staff to express my disappointment in our experience. We went to the Club Lounge for evening drinks and spoke to other guests who had witnessed the same episode. When I went through reception later that evening I was disturbed to see the second of the drunk men still there talking to the staff and then sitting on the entry couch. I spoke to the reception at that point and expressed my concern about what had happened and that it wasn't what I expected when staying at a 5* hotel with my family. The assistant manager of food and beverage - Sam - spoke to me later in the evening, which I appreciated. He advised that the men weren't guests but had come for the brunch, then bought a bottle of Congac at the rooftop bar afterwards. The man that was still downstairs later was so drunk he didn't know where he was staying so the hotel couldn't send him away as they had a duty of care. Which I guess they did after serving them that much alcohol. A hospital would be another option given their state, but probably not good for business. I expressed concern that people attending the brunch were allowed to spoil the experience for guests staying at the hotel with access to a good pool a key feature when staying with children. He did seem concerned about improving our stay and offered for us to dine in the restaurant to make up for our experience. However, we declined this and sought assurance that our experience would not be repeated and I could assure my daughter visiting the pool would be different in future. Disappointingly, this was the last time there was any check-in with us. No one at reception or the Club mentioned anything about what had happened or asked how my daughter was. The vibe was that we were difficult guests from that point and nothing like I have experienced at Accor properties before. In retrospect I should have moved hotels after such a poor start and that there was no follow up spoke to the lack of genuine concern about our experience during our stay. My daughter refused to go back to the pool again and has mentioned the events many times since, including after returning home. This stay was the low point of an otherwise wonderful holiday. There were a few other misses with this hotel that we haven't encountered elsewhere. - At check in we had mentioned that we had a night flight home and were wanting a late check out and were interested in paid options to keep one room until 6pm. We have done this many times and this has usually been complimentary given we substitute late check out across 2 rooms (Accor gold benefit) for one extra late check. When it's paid - usually when the hotel is fully occupied - we have generally paid approximately 50% of the nightly tariff. On this occasion, we were offered a late checkout (2-3pm) which was appreciated, but if we wanted to stay until 6pm in one room, we were quoted a rate that was more than the website rate to book to stay the night. I queried this and was told it was policy, which I found odd. I was then told that it would be best if we left after the offered late check out time. The latter point was frankly rude but it did achieve what they wanted - we left and went elsewhere to freshen up before our flight. This was in keeping with feeling like they wanted to be rid of us after issues on the first night. - The hotel didn't put a pending hold on our credit card when we checked in as is usual but completed the charge and then at check out they put through another charge for the final amount. So, we were charged for double and then it took a week and a follow up email by my husband for the first charge to be reversed. Overall, I will not be back and I don't think it is a great family choice

You might think we have arrived at a different hotel based everyone else’s score. This is the 3rd M Gallery of our Vietnam holiday and definitely the bottom of the pack. On arrival, it’s a busy weekend and our room is not ready - we are given a drink voucher and asked to wait and they will call on WhatsApp when room is ready. An hour and a half later, waiting, waiting! Woops! Forgot to call! Get to room - bed is two king singles pushed together. One mattress is about 5cm lower than the other, clearly had seen better days and was more akin to a 3-star establishment not a 5-star. Quiet! Nope! The sound of the brass band at the festival across the road was bouncing off the windows! The next morning we contacted housekeeping about the mattress and to their credit they arranged for us to swap rooms. The next room was a King bed with a marginally better mattress.

Hotel des Arts enjoys a well deserved reputation for being a top hotel in Saigon. The Executive Studio suite I was in was spacious and well furnished. The Club lounge aimed to please with a varied selection for breakfast and cocktail hours. The rooftop pool and bar is social and a happening place to be. All staff I interacted with were friendly and helpful. Enjoyed my stay very much and recommend it to all.

Absolutely the best thing about this hotel was the room - comfortable, clean, quiet ( must have excellent soundproofing ) and a complimentary mini bar ! Sadly I don't know the category of room we had because we booked via an agent. The decor on the ground floor is very attractive - beautiful flowers and 'interesting' art and objects. We ate lunch in the ground floor cafe once, it was fine - the afternoon tea looks spectacular ! We were a bit less impressed with the main dining room and would not have wanted to eat a meal there - mainly because of the loud music. We asked for quiet seats at breakfast which we found a bit 'hit or miss' because some things such as fresh fruit were quickly depleted but not replaced very efficiently, however no one is going to go hungry, there is a lot of choice. Service was generally polite, only one young man was 'chatty' and we enjoyed exchanging views with him. The rooftop area is a mix of pool and bar/nightclub, all in a rather small area. I would have liked to use the pool but would only have done so in the morning because of the loud music/ trendy crowds later in the day , and of course mornings are prime going out to explore time so didn't get a chance. We did go up to the bar for one drink one night - it was fun to watch the young at play for a short time, and the views are good. As others have said the hotel is well placed for visiting major attractions - we walked to the War Remnants Museum but for us it was too hot/humid to walk much further - taxis are easy to obtain.
