I found the staff very friendly, patient, and helpful. They helped us every day navigate the city, find restaurants and city services, and secure taxis. They were always ready to help. The breakfasts in the hotel were excellent. Such a treat every morning!

From the beginning, I asked for basic help, for example with payment via my company card, which requires an invoice with the company address. This was refused, but at checkout, I saw the customer in front of me with the same request fulfilled. The personnel finally agreed to add my company address. I had other basic request, and the front desk said it would call me with information. They never did call. The personnel does not include a manger and there are novices running the hotel.

I was suprised to see the old furniture and doors and windows. It was clean but there are better options for the price range. It's a bit tricky with English and stuff don't always go that smooth. For instance, even though we paid at arrival we were asked a surcharge for weekend at exit. Of course we did't pay for it but we were surprised that the staff asked for it, considering that we stayed over two weekends there. I particularly didn't like the fact that the shower was fix so you would be all wet if you wanted to wash only your legs for instance. The pool is just a regular pool. I didn't try the other facilities but they didn't seem extraordinary. Overall it wasn't bad but paying three times more than a similar hotel in an area even closer to center was a bit too much. But I've learned my lesson trusting other people who recommended it. Aaa, and I can't get the reward points for staying there. It doesn't work like flying by plane and you can claim the miles afterwards. Or maybe I didn't see this option.

tl;dr I didn't know late check-in was a thing, but we had to sit for 4 hours near the front desk. Missing items. Restaurant owner had no tact. They almost charged for non-existent chocolates. It all began with a 4-hour long wait. Check-in time was 12 PM, we finally got to our room at a little after 4 PM. In the meantime, we had to wait near the front desk. It was a muggy day and all we wanted to do was shower and change clothes, but that didn't happen. Worse, my 83-year-old grandmother--whom we had to convince to travel with us in the first place--had to sit there, humiliated and back aching. Around 2:30 PM, they finally tried to do something about it, and offered a double room for temporary use while our suite was being cleaned. I'll have to paraphrase what they told us because frankly, by that point, I was already a bit out of it from low blood pressure: "You can stay there until your suite's ready, but it shouldn't take more than a few minutes, so it'll be more trouble to move there afterwards." Father decided to wait those so-called "few minutes", as he didn't like the idea of using the room for a few minutes and wasting all those resources to have it cleaned again. ...40 minutes later, we were still waiting. Should have taken them up on the "offer" after all. Again, "it shouldn't take long now, it's almost ready." OK, we can wait for a bit longer. No use getting the temporary room now, right? Nope! The three or four "please wait a few more minutes" (or, in good Brazilian Portuguese, "minutinhos") added up to four hours. By that point, we were mad enough to simply walk out and find another hotel, and to hell with the prepaid fees. As if sensing we were about to get our luggage from storage and give up on Mercure Golden, lo and behold, it was ready at last. Luckily, I hadn't paid for the stay at another hotel yet--was seconds away from that, as my browser history can attest. The room seemed to be in order, if still damp in some places. It obviously hadn't been renovated since ever, but aside from an ominous crack in the plaster around the entrance door (it was bigger than my forearm), it was cozy and wasn't moldy, so no complaints on that front. Our expectations had been lowered accordingly. Had we known it would take 15 minutes for our bags to be brought to our rooms, we would have done it ourselves, it wouldn't have been a problem at all. Now, something that did bug me a little was why the beds moved so much and had no latch. We had to do some clever baggage placement to affix it so my grandmother wouldn't fall, but no biggie. After examining the counter and finding some teabags, one question arose: was it practical to ask for hot water every time we wanted some tea? Fortunately (or not), housekeeping had simply forgotten to replace the electric kettle. Breakfast (again, prepaid) was nice, except for the unripe fruits. The less said about the pre-cut fruit salad the better. The restaurant owner did sour my appetite by loudly reprimanding an employee. She couldn't have possibly missed me, considering where I was sitting. The ham did give my father a stomachache on Monday. It was slightly sour and the only thing he ate that could possibly have caused it. Let's skip to check-out day. As I was looking under the beds to make sure I didn't forget anything... there was this huge yellow plushie between the bed and the curtains. How could anyone change the sheets and not notice it is beyond me, but it happened. At around 11 AM, on my way to the airport, a phone call. "Did we forget something after all?", I wondered. Nope! For some reason, some chocolates hadn't been replaced prior to our stay, so they were calling to confirm the charge, seeing as we opted for the express check-out. At least they called before charging anything... hopefully. Haven't checked credit card history yet to confirm. The best part was the pool, which was surprisingly as nice as the photos suggested. There's a leak in the changing room's shower stall that might be worth looking into. Throughout our stay, we felt the staff lacked effective communication and a little more transparency. Waiting wouldn't have been so bad had they been upfront and told us it would take this long from the beginning.
