« Held up in reception against my will »

I've been staying with Ibis Douala since 2014 (one time for 2 full months) it used to be cleaner, now the floor has stains, under the bath tub you may find all sorts of left overs from previous visits, its so dirty now. However the most alarming incident happened with the receptionist which is as follows: My full stay have been paid from Expedia and I booked an extra night from reception as my flight departs at 01:35 am At 23:30 I wanted to check out and settle my bill which was XAF 68,000 I submitted my credit card however the receptionist said that the credit card machine was not working and I have to settle it by cash. I asked him to take a copy of the credit card and deduct the amount the next day after they fix the machine. The receptionist said thats not possible and cash will be the only acceptable mean of invoice settlement. During this time we were being put under stress of not catching up with our plane while the receptionist was making us wait while he serves beer to 2 apparently Italian guests, and then greeting welcome to another lady who entered the hotel while we are starting to get anxious about missing our flight. Therefore we accepted to pay cash using the only cash we are carrying which was 200$ and then he tells us that the bill is 130$ (that is at exchange rate of 520) which is absurd because the official rate is 585. He said this is the hotel rate. I felt something fishy going on here and wanted to take a cigarette outside the hotel gate to think things over and not let stress take over our decision. The receptionist protested and asked the security to lock the doors as if I'm a thieve or a hostage in this foreign country. At this time I started shouting and threatened to send an email to Accor chain but he didn't mind. Then when I opened my phone camera and started taking a video and asked him on record to open the door for me he asked the security to open the door. If he didn't I was planning to smash the glass door with my bag and run for the nearby police station. To that extent I felt my security being threatened. While I was outside the hotel my colleague took my credit card back to the reception and payment through credit card machine was processed normally, which proves that the machine was working and the receptionist wanted to rip us off with 10$ because by cash there's no evidence on what he received and he can go on and say he received 120$ which is the correct rate and based on which our credit card was charged and not 130$ which he asked to be settled by cash. It surprises me that as a loyal returning customer who stays at Ibis Douala once every year at least and this is my second visit in 2 months that I'm treated this way. This brings back memories of having troubles with receptionists many other times before with different ponzy schemes to rip me off. Every employee in the hotel know me and the company I work for and this receptionist doesn't trust to take a copy of my credit card or accept the promise that my company will settle my bill the next day in case he doesn't want to charge the credit card. After this incident I will never stay in Ibis Douala again and I'm writing this to help other guests avoid being ripped off and not to avenge the receptionist and this is why I didn't mention his name.

Rooms are what you expected of an Ibis: simple and functional. Breakfast is better than the average Ibis with an omelette stand and a few local specialties. I had lunch too and the burger was amazing! They also provide airport transfer for free.

Although in general was a satisfactory experience, there were many things to improve. The room was old, bed not too comfortable and old bathroom with old bath with courtain! Breakfast was only aceptable. Clean hotel. Well placed.

Staying for a 4 weeks period at a time. Friendly helpful staff and food service. Food is good although limited menu means you’ll look to the occasional restaurant. Sadly lacking a gym within the hotel. There is a swimming pool.

The Hotel as such is fine, no surprises typical IBIS. But the staff at the reception forgot that they work for a globally known franchise. Have to beg t get someone to pick the laundry in the room (twice) and lucky if you dont get an angry staff complaining that this is Sunday and of course nobody works on Sunday. You know what I do and so should you !!
