I have been visiting The Mecure Hotel Winchester regularly for just over 3 years. I chose to stay here because the hotel welcomes well behaved dogs and its central location is excellent. I was very disappointed on my recent visit with the poor service in the hotel's bar, and more surprisingly, with the manager on duty at breakfast on Saturday 13th October. I had a train to catch to London which meant I needed to grab a quick continental breakfast. I went down to the dining room a little early and asked if it was ok to have some cereal. The manager told me that breakfast would be open in 10 minutes and walked away. When I asked the waitress whether that meant I could have some cereal she was embarrassed and said she didn't know and that it had to be the managers decision. He was nowhere to be seen. When I looked at the time it was 07.27, a mere 3 minutes until breakfast officially began. I had been spoken to abruptly and then been ignored by the manager. I was made to feel invisible and was angry and upset. I went in without his permission and had a continental breakfast but didn't have time for a hot drink. I made absolutely no demands on any staff. I am disgusted by this poor attitude and am considering using an alternative venue on my next trip down. I certainly WILL NOT be paying for breakfast again! Melane Newman.

We have just returned from a thoroughly enjoyable stay at the Mercure Winchester Wessex Hotel. Its central location in the heart of of the town was excellent, offering easy exploration of key sites. We had requested a quiet, tranquil room and we were very happy with the accommodation we were allocated on the top floor. The decor and style of the hotel is redolent of the 1970s but our room was spacious and well appointed with a lovely view of the Cathedral and its grounds. Everything in our room functioned efficiently and the bathroom facilities were very good. Our two night stay was very comfortable.All the hotel staff we encountered were courteous, friendly and very helpful and we were certainly treated as welcome guests. We would recommend the Mercure Wessex to anyone wishing to visit Winchester - we are already planning our return trip.

Good but ……….. Towels too small, couldn't wrap hand-towel round my hair when washed and bath towel just about covered any modesty - should upgrade to bath blanket sizes. Drains were very slow running (room 201) ended up paddling in water at end of shower and waited 10 mins for it to drain away.

We've made many visits to Winchester over the years and have always used this hotel - its location is first class for strolling around the town, down by the river, shops and general sight seeing. We only bed and breakfast now as have found many eating places in the town but this time we noticed that the hotel menu for meals had been updated and were sorely tempted - maybe next time.

Everything was OK till 2am. Then I was woken up by loud people in the street. This continued on and off till about 4am. Then at 5.30 The street cleaning machine started. I slept very little and was wiped out when I had to deliver a training course the next morning

This was a short business trip and the location and stay was good. Unfortunately I faced one problem but I did not report it. I was staying in Room 217, and the walls are quite thin and not sound-proof. I could hear sounds from TV till late hours from an adjacent room. Hope this can be fixed.

The room was large, comfortable and clean, the dining room staff pleasant, reception staff . Although I arrived early I was kept waiting until the advertised check in time, got the impression this was on principle rather than necessity. Only given room number when the manager intervened.The dinner menu was limited and disappointing, breakfast was just ok. Parking horrendous, several spaces blocked by line of cars bedind. Used the recommended taxi company who left me in freezing cold for 15 minutes. Would not chose to return

The bathroom sink was cracked and there was a disgusting build up of detritus in the sink waste pipe which was clearly seen. The toilet cistern took a long time to fill. The shower screen leaked. Other than these the hotel met our needs and was in easy walking distance of all the areas we wanted to visit.

My second visit to the hotel in Winchester and I only booked due to the central location. I found the receptionists much friendly this year than last. The hotel is still very tired and in need of an upgrade, but generally it is clean, Unfortunately the towels are still very small. Choice at breakfast is quite good but the eggs are very rubbery, due to being left on the hotplate for self service and one of the waiters was quite grumpy. The first morning we were not even seated and had to clear a table for ourselves. The second morning, the waiter was very pleasant.

The check in was a bit of a disaster. I wasn't allowed to check in before my room was ready. Never had this in a hotel. Then when I came back myself and other gusts were told to go and wait in the lounge and we would be called. No one ever came so after a while we went back to find a large queue. So took over 30 mins to check in and the receptionist wasn't friendly. After that all staff were wonderful and very helpful.
