We had a really nice stay for a couple of nights whilst Christmas shopping. The only thing I could fault was the pillows... a lot of money has clearly been invested in decorating the hotel - and for me a comfortable bed and a good night sleep is the most important thing. The bed was fine but the pillows were very disappointing. Please invest in good quality pillows and you will be about perfect!

« Great location, friendly staff, shabby rooms/hotel in need of investment. »

The hotel is well located for central Exeter and its attractions.Parking is ample but expensive.The staff were generally friendly and accomodating but didnt always listen carefully to requests. The hotel looks very run down.The common areas are tired and worn ( e.g fraying carpet on stairs and entrance).The rooms are outdated, furniture cheap and damaged and curtains look as if they are from a 1950's movie. The standard double beds are small and uncomfortable and pillows neck -achingly bulky.Swimming pool and gym were popular and generally clean with helpful staff but again the facilities looked tired and in need of refurbishment. Rooms facing Southernhay are noisy especially when you cant fully close the windows due to vents above permanently open.

A good experience, the suite was very pleasant, the pool a good way to relax after a 200 mile drive. A visit to meet up with family in Exeter. Whilst the stair carpet is a little worn the staff were friendly and the breakfast wholesome. My only minor minor complaint would be the lack of orange juice at breakfast, we will stay here again.

« Rooms a bit too small to be relaxing, staff lovely but not enough of them. Signs of cost cutting and lack of staff training. »

Check in quite lengthy and confused, and given wrong room initially. Sorted out by brilliant Louis on reception, who was fantastic and professional. First room smelled heavily of disinfectant or cleaning fluid - had there been an accident in it? Given better room. Restaurant dinner menu looked very ordinary, so went out in the rain to eat elsewhere. Breakfast chaotic and understaffed, the servers did their best but were clearly stressed. Nearly all cooked items were absent and there was a long wait to get bacon, tomatoes, hash browns etc.replenished. A single server carried heavy flasks of tea (too weak) and coffee. Preferable to have teapot on table so guests can regulate tea strength to suit themselves. As it was so understaffed it took a long time to get first and then second cup. On second morning at breakfast, I had to reject four cereal bowls, then five large plates, all of them with old food still stuck on them from dishwasher. A sandwich from the bar menu was a total disaster - not on the bread as per menu but soft sliced that was too weak to hold the filling. Most of it got wasted. I also had to ask for (1) a napkin and (2) a plate as the little slab of wood it was served on was inadequately small. The waiter I raised this with did not know what to do, spoke to chef, who declined to come and explain, and after 20 minutes or so he got a manager, Andrew, who sorted this out. I feel this is not fair on your staff - they need to know how to handle such incidents,

The car park isn't very spacious and the fees charged are exorbitant. The sandwich lunch had veggie and meat options on the same plates. The meeting room door wouldn't unlock and I had to go to reception 3 times before they sent someone to help. The evening meal I got the wrong size wine and the wrong food.

Great location close to Quay and city centre. Room was clean and well maintained. Staff were polite throughout our stay. Experience let down by £12 per day car park charges. This charge is not clearly explained on website - eventually located and detailed in drop down box.

Overall I was very happy, the Leisure Facilities are excellent albeit I did only use the pool. Sorry but I'm afraid the Chicken Curry I ordered was not a portion that equates to any where near £18. This, unfortunately would make me think twice about staying again as I often use Room Service for the convenience while I'm working from my room.

Your reception staff were very helpful and we were able to move our room to a less noisy one. The hotel was very cold when we arrived and the air vents kept pushing out cold air making the lounge bar and restaurant very cold. Although there was an extensive Bar Menu there were supposed to be specials served in the restaurant, these were not available during the three nights we stayed. Service was slow and our first night saw our starters delivered to another table so we had to wait a very long time for our bread and olives. I think the other table thought they were complimentary! Food was not very hot and together with a cold room not conducive to enjoyment on a cold evening. I would stay at the hotel again but not on a Dinner bed and Breakfast rate.

Have stayed at this hotel about 6 times and love it, however this time was not as good, had stains down the wall which hadn't been cleaned and the safety box was not working, so had to carry our valuables with us ie ipad etc. Couldn't get it fixed as we had to be out of the hotel within 1/2 hour of arriving, to meet friends.

The staff and room were great. Only small issues were that the tv in the sitting room area didn’t work, no heated towel rail in the bathroom, towels were small. Room was spotless and well equipped.

I am generally very happy with the service from the Mercure Hotel, Southgate, however there are a couple of issues that disappoint me; leaving dirty glasses/coffee cups in my room, room service trays, empty bottles and glasses remaining in the corridor for long periods. The staff are very good, occasionally let down by the system or management. The fabric of the hotel is beginning to show its age, just the right side of "shabby chic".

The Hotel is still very good, but, there are four items which let our stay down. The first was at breakfast we did not get a tea pot etc. on the table, but, a member of staff came around pouring tea or coffee from a large pot. The tea was cold. Secondly we prefer cups and saucers on the breakfast table, and not mugs. Thirdly the bath towels were VERY small. Finally we had to pay £12 for parking. A friend of mine had visited the weekend before, they stayed in the car park all day and did not pay, even though they were staying at your sister hotel in Exeter.
