« Great central location but needs to improve on the little things »

We had a two night stay tagged onto two nights in Cornwall. Fantastic location for this city centre hotel, just a few yards walking from Cathedral Close. Good sized car park. £12/day added to bill for residents. Where we thought there needs to be some more staff training perhaps?- the greeter for dinner and breakfast should be there in situ and when they are there not to greet you with 'just a moment please' and for there never to be 'no greeter' which in our case then caused a queue of people waiting.To listen to customers - the lady in front had a toddler as well as a little one in a push chair - she had to ask more than once for a high chairbreakfast - cereal plates not washed properly - both days, think previous day's cereal gets stuck and dishwasher not up for the job; the standard coffee brought to our table at 9 was luke warm and so stewed it was horrid. Tried the machine - not working - milk part needed something. Asked for it to be sorted - but young man didn't know how to so then offered me a cappucino which was fine. Other customers in exact same situation trying to source decent coffee. When plates cleared at breakfast, if customer has a piece of toast on his/her plate, would be good to return with a new knife without having to try and find one; silly little things but just make it annoying. The breakfast hot buffet was very nice. No marmalade, though available in Exeter, leastwise not when we were there. Had asked on the Sunday eve for a cocktail - but the seemingly ages wait firstly while the young lad was changing a barrel and then whilst he searched for a cocktail menu made me change my mind. I felt if the menu couldn't be easily located then he probably wasn't that experienced in making them! In the bedroom our loo seat was very wobbly and about to come off; the 'desk' chair had a lot of marks on it which didn't make it inviting to sit on. I reported at reception and both sorted immediately so fine, BUT shouldn't the room person have picked this up and reported it? He/she would have had to clean/move both in order to prepare the room so not quite sure why left for te guest to report... Walk in shower was good. Room decor was dark, but that is a personal view.The pool was great - 15m long /4 lanes and open early - 0630 I think it was. Changing room fine. Good facility to have. Perhaps the Sunday team aren't as experienced as those in the week as more of a business hotel?

Many of our guests and corporate clients use public transport, so request a tariff which excludes car parking. Booked in online so very quick to get keys etc. Car park was very full due to attendees at financial management and sales leadership events which took over far too much of the public areas of the hotel making it too crowded to fully enjoy. Trying to get a seat in the bar / coffee lounge was near on impossible and turned out to be very noisy so again spoiled what we expected would be a nice relaxed break. Room was only supplied with sufficient toiletries for one person, even though we’d booked a room for two people, resulting in us asking the maids for extras. Overall if this is what we can expect that the hotel is taken over by corporate events during the day then we’ll have to start looking for alternative places to stay which is a pity as we are regular visitors to this hotel.

« Very satisfied with the room but the service fell a little short of that usually experienced at Sheffield St Paul's. »

Upgraded room very comfortable and clean. Unfortunately did not receive complimentary newspaper and in corridor there were (other guest's) breakfast trays left most of the day until we advised Reception. Reception Staff were very good as were those in the Bar. The Breakfast arrangements lacked the 'sharpness' of your Sheffield St Paul's hotel.

Standards have slipped in recent months. Platinum status appears to count for nothing. I was initially given a standard room. Air conditioning problems in rooms continue (faulty aircon). Breakfast service - poor. Dis-organised I would say. No-one at breakfast entrance. No bowls for cereal (twice this week I had to ask for bowls). The breakfast staff are pleasant and helpful. It's just the lack of organisation which is letting the hotel down.

The room was good. The leisure facilities are very good. In the evening when using the bar there was no toilet roll in the toilets and still none after I reported it. The food still not brilliant At breakfast I Had to wait 10 mins for fried eggs! The bread for toast is awful. I Had to ask for jam and marmalade. Honey in a big cheap tub. Disappointing! Lunch choices are strange! And it takes ages for fresh to come out when it runs out. Dinner was good being able to choose from the main menu.

Have stayed at the Southgate many times due to location and parking in the centre of Exeter. During this visit I was impressed by your reception team and the check in process but breakfast was a bit disappointing, limited range of food and stations were very messy. Only bread available was sliced for toast no roll etc. I am hoping this was just a one off as previously has been fine.

« Disappointing. Not up to the Accor hotel standard we’ve experienced thus far. »

No usual warmth or hospitality, even with Accor membership. Nothing included, not even coffee/tea service or water. After a 3 hour train ride, when we checked in, the lobby table was loaded with cookies, muffins & tea - we merely glanced at the table & were promptly scolded by a staff member saying ‘cookies were for delegates only’... no offer to upgrade as an Accor member. Even gym would only give one worn old towel to use pool. No conditioner or lotion in rooms.... incredibly disappointing. Not at all up to Accor expectations.

We couldn't get into our room so went down to reception and the 'keys' got sorted and given back.Unfortunately when we opened the room someone else was using it.We got two free drinks as compensation.

« Disappointing second stay »

We had such a good experience the last time we stayed that there was no other hotel we were going to stay in for this trip. Unfortunately the experience was very different this time around. Check in was efficient and pleasant however the room allocated to us this time was quite tired and not like the room we had previously. The best part last time was the breakfast and this time it was the worst. No clean plates or bowls, glasses still with lipstick stains or heavy water stains which made them all look dirty. We told staff as soon as we noticed and asked for clean plates/bowls - noted but no action taken so we asked for the manager as my partner refused to have breakfast as a result. I grabbed a quick coffee and toast as I had a long train journey ahead and we were gone. I had picked the bed and breakfast option when booking because it was so nice last time. The manager agreed to take one breakfast from our bill, but this didn't happen when I received my emailed invoice receipt. And we paid £22 for breakfast for 2 people, advertised in the lift on our arrival for £10 per person - so why did i bother adding it to the room only rate on booking??? and don't offer me something to resolve the problem and then not follow through! Really disappointed with this stay this time round.
