Rooms on third floor tired and dated; hairs in the shower which weren't mine. Despite explicitly asking that 3x rooms be charged to my card (when booking online) the hotel wouldn't initially allow my guests (who arrived before me) to check in without the card holder present. This was despite the hotel contacting me on the subject earlier in the day when I advised I would be arriving after the guests. All a little embarrassing when my guests were customers but particularly frustrating when my reservation was secured on my credit card when I booked online in the first place (ie they'd had my card details for over a month!)

I have stayed many times at the Mercure St Pauls and have enjoyed the experience, This stay however i encountered a couple of issues/inconveniences 1/ the lifts where out of order, had to use the Spa lift though that was often occupied by staff with trollies packed in to the point there was no room for guests so had to wait only for it to be the same the next time it arrived, might have been a good idea to only put in one trolly at a time leaving room for guests, 2/ and most troubling was the issue with the shower in room 424 it wasn't able to stay at a constant temperature, going from warm to cold to warm to cold to boiling to cold a rather unpleasant experience, Hopefully if i return i won't have a repeat of these unfortunate events,

« Good but not great in view of price »

The hotel is in a great location, staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was comfortable, spacious and quiet but quite tired, particularly the bathroom. Felt that it was quite highly priced in view of this and the fact that breakfast was not better than it would have been in any of the more budget hotels. The pool was very nice though and not disappointing. One of the lifts was out of order which did not affect us at all as we used the stairs, but as this is mentioned in many of the reviews, I would have thought that it would be worth getting this sorted quickly.

After we checked into our room we realised we had lights but no power to use anything else electrical My husband told reception whose words were ok and were very off hand but said they would send some one . No one arrived so we rang again once again very off hand but the manager / duty manager came to are room. On arriving back from evening out there was a strong smell of bad drains comming bathroom which was reported. This stay was not what we expected, but would possibly stay again

Overall the stay was enjoyable. But I was unimpressed with the breakfast, bearing in mind the cost. I could have had a better experience at Cafe Nero across the square. I also think you need to replace the towels in the bedroom which I found extremely tired and very small. The hotel needs new fluffy towels which are bath sheet size rather than the smaller version which I had in my room

I was lucky to get a rate of £65 for a Friday night. Ordinarily this hotel is out of my price range. The swimming pool and spa were included too. The room was very large. 2 x lovely comfy beds. The bathroom had a bath plus a walk in shower. Lovely view over the Peace Gardens. I would always stay here if it was within my budget!!

the hotel is very nice and the staff were all very attentive and helpful but some things just let it down. The room cards hadn't been activated, fortunately a member of staff (Adam) was in the corridor or I would have had to make a return trip to reception, he was extremely helpful. Despite authorising a credit card for both rooms I was challenged 3 times in the bar (in front of people) saying that there was no money on the room, I felt as if I was being accused of something, I finally asked that they check with reception as I was becoming annoyed, this was eventually sorted and the poor girl was very apologetic, the bar manager who had told her to request payment from us and sent her back twice to say we didn't have an money on the room DIDN'T make any attempt to apologise. Checkout was very efficient and the staff very friendly and breakfast was lovely with plenty of fresh hot food. Unfortunately both lifts were out of action during the weekend, meaning a lots of stairs or the one lift in the spa, one lift was fixed pretty quickly. The safe in the room had been left locked by the previous occupant and obviously hadn't been checked by service staff, I know we could have called reception but we only discovered it as i tried to lock my jewelry away as we were about to leave the room so we didn't have time to wait for it to be sorted.

« Disappointing in parts »

For the price paid, the hotel was disappointing. It was good that there was a gym and pool, but disappointingly no jacuzzi. The member of staff at reception was friendly, but there was a massive crack in the wardrobe mirror that should have been repaired before letting a guest stay there. The breakfast was the most disappointing, The hot food was cold and the coffee was revolting. As I was finishing, the waiter asked if I'd like more coffee, I told him it tasted revolting and he offered me an Americano. But why wasn't this offered to start with, it was a bit late to offer as I had already finished my breakfast by then.

« This was an apology from Mercure for a previous stay so cant complain »

The staff were attentive the room clean and spacious. The only thing was that the tv reception and wifi were dreadful (room 511). This didnt make a difference to our stay as we didnt spend a huge amount of time in the room but could impact on someone staying for work purposes.

Overall OK... check in time was too long considering my accommodation had already been debited from my credit card. Still applying a charge of a next to zero value on my credit card on check-in is also I have never seen if over 30 years of travelling. Room was OK, but thermostat to control the room temperature was just like "a wall decoration" as it did not work.

« The overall experience was very positive. »

The cleanliness of the hotel and friendly staff were especially commendable. The location of the hotel is also excellent. The lady staff who brought our room service was extremely courteous and went out of her way to bring us the bedroom slippers which we mentioned we would have liked to have. Exceeded our expectations. Owan Atkins who manages the breakfast team performs his duties to perfection. He remembered us from our previous trip about 2 to 3 years ago.
