« Fabulous service »

Lovely staff - a special shout out to the lady on reception last Friday night and Sat am(Dot??) who went above and beyond. Everyone from the people making the rooms ready to the restaurant staff were friendly and helpful. And they do their best in a building that dates from 1637 and has the creaks to go with it! Apparently plans are afoot to refurbish- which would be fab but we would happily stay here again anyway.

« Mostly OK with a !of of character. »

On the whole the experience OK. The room was quite large and clean, the only fault was a lack of usable drawer space. In the restaurant there was not a lot of choice on the evening meal but what we chose was very nice. The breakfast had a lot of choice and was nicely presented although the hot food was only luke warm but this seems to be the norm at most hotels that serve buffet breakfast. We found the staff to be pleasant and helpful. We would stay again if we were in the area.

« Value for money, service lacking at times »

Room was fine, although decoration etc a little tired. Reception staff helpful, but bar staff often missing (waited ages to get served) and choice of drinks poor. No plain tonic water (had been out of stock for a week) and no brandies other than cognac. Also dirty cups/glasses (from drinks we had had earlier) still on the table we had sat at 2 hours later when we returned to the bar. Why is the least expensive wine on the wine list not available by the glass?

Godd reception. Room dated. Blind was broken. Tv remote not working.

« Garden Wing Accommodation in need of refurbishment »

On arrival we found numerous elements / items of dissatisfaction with our room having stayed in an excellent hotel in Samlesbury, Lancashire for 4 days previously. Our stay in Banbury Cross was a present from our family. We contacted Reception and asked for the Duty Manager to come to our room. Charlie Collins (DM) fully understood our concerns and dissatisfaction and whilst unable to transfer us to another room that evening kindly issued us with a complimentary Voucher for another stay at the Hotel. I would like to record our appreciation of the very professional and courteous manner in which Mr Collins dealt with the matter.

« Interesting comfortable hotel. »

An interesting historical hotel building, with wonderful wood panelling and leaded glass windows. Full of character. We really liked the large bedroom (room 20) with wonderful original fireplace and 'secret stairwell'. A shame we couldn't draw back the single net curtain fastened at either side of the window frame (dingy and in need of wash or replacement) to admire the splendid original leaded glass windows. The sink tap came off in my hand, but I did manage to put it back on. Other than that the bathroom was nice and clean with good facilities. Staff friendly, downstairs lounge very comfortable and welcoming. Excellent breakfast in lovely dining room.

« Disappointed »

Very disappointed with cleanliness, reported this nothing done really and still awaiting a call from the manager. Not good customer service!

« Hotel rather tired, staff very pleasant, food choice poor. »

The hotel is a lovely old building but in need of a serious up date. The floors are very squeaky and the windows old and draughty. We thought the food choice for dinner was poor although the breakfast was satisfactory. The staff were very pleasant and helpful. We found the hotel was very noisy the night we were there and I was kept awake from around 12.00 pm to 3.30 am by boisterous noise from the bar.

« Room shabby & tired but staff polite & professional »

Booked into an executive bedroom but found the room struggled to be regarded as a 'standard' room. No water or glasses left in bedroom. One coffee mug not cleaned. Shower tap fitting whole assembly very loose. Sink edge cracked and one single bed mattress springs very unfortable. Electric kettle needed cleaning inside element.

« Great quirky place in fantastic surroundings with wonderful staff »

Very very pleasant apart from the first night when there was a wedding on and the barman seemed a little unsure of whether I could get dinner "I will see what the chef can do" isn't really the response a resident should expect. I suspect he was just being over cautious because in the turnout I got a truly wonderful Caesar salad followed by a magnificent cheeseboard that should have been billed "to share". How many hotels have a directory board that includes Croquet Lawn - enough said. The rooms are very pleasant, clean and well kept, breakfast was up to the usual high Mercure standard, a plea for someone who doesn't tolerate yeast very well for some more variety on the toast, mini croissant front with maybe a few scotch pancakes or soda scones would be a welcome addition for myself but otherwise very good, excellent selection of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, juices etc. Dinner the second night was an absolute feast as I ordered the charcuterie sharing platter as a main due to the heatwave - this was perfection of meats plus mozerella like I have never seen with a wonderful olive oil and balsamic dip plus bread and olives etc. All in all a very nice experience as usual - highly recommended.

« could do better »

hotel needs a major make over rooms are dated need upgrade. it could be so so much better. restaurant staff good and bar staff reception staff very hit & miss !! we felt badly let down on the meal because we were on BUY A GIFT night so the food choice was down graded but still happy to charge us full price for a bottle of wine and sweet!

« Tired looking in parts hotel »

Our room was unsatisfactory in terms of clean and looks. Staff were brilliant but really didn't make up for an expensive stay in terms for valve for money. Hopefully if the new upgrade of the hotel goes ahead we would return, depending on rates or special offers for unsatisfied customers.

« Mr H. »

The hotel is in dire need of an update. The room was boiling hot and even after opening the window it was hard to sleep. I was at the front of the hotel and kept awake by 2 separate fights going on outside the hotel in the middle of the night (this was on a Wednesday night). The toilet in the room broke so we couldn't flush it all night. The sofa in the room looked like it came from a charity shop. The chairs at breakfast wobbled from side to side. There was no parking available when we arrived as the car park was full due to a conference. No alternative was offered. I wouldn't stay here again if you paid me.

« Dissapointed »

Room smelt musty and could do with a good clean. We had an evening meal and i had a chicken and leek pie, there were few very small peices of chicken and fragments of leek. I spoke to the waiter and he spoke to the chef. He did offer to replace it but i said to him what is the point as they were obviously not made on site. I was not even offered a refund and i did not make a fuss as my wife who is very ill was getting upset.

Staff very helpful. Restaurant service excellent but prebooked 2 course meal overpriced as Table d'Hote menu provided was cheaper and with limited choice! Corrected by addition of extra choice but not as expected..
