On this occasion the room was cold as radiators needed bleeding. No one had keys to their rooms so we had to find a night porter to let us in. Will probably be the last time we stay here

The staff were very friendly and over worked. Rooms were spacious and very comfortable. The food was delicious and cooked perfectly. But the door lock was a bit of a issue. As the staff had to come upstairs to open the doors all the time. But a great place to stay. I would like to come back.

« Worst hotel experience for a very long time »

This hotel is chaotic. It really needs to close down and start again. For the entire duration of my stay (3 nights) none of the guests had door keys as the card system was broken. We had to rely on someone taking us to our room to open the door. This involved hanging around in reception waiting until someone was available. OK things sometimes go wrong but for this to remain unresolved over a 4 day period is unacceptable. My room, like the whole hotel' was tired and run down. The bathroom was scruffy and the window in the bedroom was broken. The food was extremely poor as was the service in the restaurant. Quite how it can take over an hour to serve a meal in a virtually empty restaurant is hard to understand. I booked a dinner bed and breakfast inclusive deal, but this was not reflected in my final bill, which also included items I did not book or receive. Because I had to leave quickly on my final day to get to work I didn't have time to sort this out fully. Some of the staff did try hard in very challenging circumstances, but others were morose and unhelpful. Overall this was shocking. Had I been paying £30 a night it might have been just about tolerable but I paid considerably more than this. Either bring up your standards or bring down your prices

It really was one of the worst stays I have ever had in a hotel. My sister and I staying in 2 rooms were astounded by the standards in this hotel. I cannot be bothered to spend time answering this questionnaire. I felt sorry for the staff. It MUST be a management problem. I know its a cheaper hotel but senior management must sort this hotel out.

Staff were great - breakfast was good. Keycards still not working but not a great problem. Public areas were clean, bright and very good. My room was tired and in need of renovation. Carpet faded, stained and threadbare. Bathroom tired. Windows running with condensation. Bed was excellent.

« Very poor and no apology or offer of compensation after power cut »

My room went into complete darkness at 7.30pm, I had wet hair and was in my pyjamas trying to finish my work off and prepare for the following day. The power did not come on again and it still wasn't working when I left in the morning. I have tried to get in touch with customer services but have had no reply as the minimum I would have expected is to be offered a nights stay free of charge seen as it wasn't a great experience. I even had an electrician knocking at my door who shone a torch in my face, scaring me half to death as I wasn't waned and they could have just called my room and I could have done what he did tried the lights to see they still weren't working. « Dreadful hotel. Do not stay here. »

The hotel does not give out keys to guests, instead saying the "machine is broken". I was there for 2 weeks and apparently it had already been broken for 2 weeks before that. Asking staff to let me in my room twice a day was tedious, especially when I then had to wait for someone to come and do it and make small talk about the fact the machine was broken. How does a hotel expect to operate without a key cutting machine long term? Unacceptable. The breakfast was OK but different procedure for ordering depending on who was serving you. If the hotel was busy the kitchen couldn't cope. One day the chef didn't turn up so the only option was cereal. Smoked salmon was always "waiting on a delivery" - clearly too expensive to order so the hotel just doesn't supply it - remove it from the breakfast menu or supply what you offer. The room was OK but needs a deep clean. I was disturbed on several occasions because the walls are so thin - I should not hear the guest next door using the toilet or brushing their teeth. Why did I get a brand new soap every day? Such a waste. One night I was woken up at 3am by water gushing through the ceiling into the bathroom. Reception told me to let the water run and they would move me in the morning - by which time the leak had stopped. No one followed up on this, I can only assume the night staff did nothing about it. The hotel lounge/bar has been refurbished to look new but unfortunately this is not reflected in the bedrooms. I tried to use the pool and spa as advertised on the website, but was told it had been decommissioned in January this year - update the website! I was made to pay upfront for my booking for 2 weeks so unfortunately I was unable to leave and stay elsewhere.

The key card system was broken, so we had to wait to be let into our room. Thankfully we weren’t intending to leave the room again for the evening. The room was boiling. After 3 hours of having the window open and turning off the radiator it was about bearable! The phone in our room was broken. Minor inconvenience. The staff were friendly and helpful despite all these problems they were dealing with.

There was clearly mould in the room which had been wallpapered over. There were no individual room keys. I had to be let in and out by a member of staff. The room smelled and was very old and tired looking.

Firstly the room allocated was not cleaned which could have been a genuine mistake but it meant we had to climb more stairs to another room. The room was fine but not very clean. The bedside tables were dusty and the bathroom floor was greasy. The bathroom mirror was not clean. The toilet had a cracked bowl which looked like someone had left a big black hair in it. There was no key available for our door as the key machine was not working so we felt trapped in our room or obliged to find a member of staff to escort us to our room. The breakfast was okay but the fried eggs did not arrive to after I had taken the scrambled egg as there was no other choice. Also the cinnamon cakes arrived later when I had already eaten toast. There was no peppermint tea or Redbush tea available. I didn't even ask for decafinated coffee as I expect it would have been instant.

We have stayed at this hotel over the last 20 years when it was the Goldthorn. The staff as always very helpful and polite. They are a credit to your team. On this occasion when we checked in we were informed there were no room keys. Some kind of fault so it was a inconvenience to have to go to reception or call for someone to come and let us into our room which was in the business centre. However we were given complimentary breakfast as compensation. We were very grateful for that. We stayed on room 93 in the business centre and I have flagged this up before about the bathroom. The shower is terrible. The water trickles and is just not good enough. That room would be 100% if the bathroom was updated especially by installing a new shower. The room itself should have two chairs next to the table as we had to keep picking up the chair by the dressing table! We love this hotel it’s been a huge part of our family’s many celebrations etc. For myself and my husband we stayed here on our wedding night and prior to that we to stay every Sunday. It’s lacks coziness now. Too clinical. I hope my feedback helps to improve things as we enjoy staying in room 93.

THE KEY CARD SYSTEM BIENG OUT OF ACTION DIDNT HELP MAKE THE STAY WHAT WE USUALLY GET FROM MERCURE. HAVING TO WAITE FOR STAFF TO BECOME AVAILABLE TO ESCORT US TO OUR ROOM WASNT VERY PLEASANT. ALSO AT BREAKFAST ON THE SUNDAY MORNING0-WHEN ITEMS ARE RAN OUT THERE WAS A LONG DELAY TO REPLENISH. A NUMBER OF GUESTS FELT THE SAME.

Hotel rather dated and in need of reinvestment. Usually a Mercure Hotel is a reliable brand but not in this case. Room key card system not working at all.Ground floor toilets do not have locks on doors!
