« Poor hotel staff not interested as look understaffed and soundproofing in rooms awful »

Terrible. Rooms very old with zero sound proofing - no change from 30 years ago. Restaurant - appauling. Waited 30 minutes to be served, gave up and went out - cam back later was told to sit down and a menu would be brought over - nothing. Got my own menu, went to bar to order - first two choices unavailable and then told 45 minute wait despite there being hardly anyone in bar/restaurant. Food arrived quite quickly but was thrown down and no offer of sauces. I ate - it was ok but you cant really mess up a burger can you and left and paid. Breakfast - no interest from staff to come to table, no offer of tea or any sort of service. Basically, worst hotel experience for a long time

The room was quite small. The bed spread was bobbly and needs chucked out. The staff were friendly and helpful but the cooked breakfast was very poor. The sausages were pink inside and tasted dreadful. Great location though.

« Not too bad the food wasn't very good. »

The room was clean and comfortable. The bath/shower water was only warm and not hot. The conference facilities were good. The view was lovely and the hotel very convenient for shops and station. The breakfast was awful. As I am a vegetarian there was not much I could eat. There were no scrambled eggs, in fact no eggs at all, the beans were dried on to the dish. The croissants were tiny and overcooked, an dry. I probably only consumed about £1.50 worth of food and paid £11. I will not pay for a breakfast in a Mercure hotel again. The standard of the food was very poor.

We were very disappointed with the dinner menu changes, the bar arrangements and the now totally self-service breakfast. At one time we would have dinner in the restaurant on each evening of our stay, but this time it was reduced to just one occasion due to there not being the same range of dishes on offer, leaving aside the more fast food-type choices, which do not interest us. We were also very put out about the bar closing at midnight, meaning we had to take our drinks to our room. At breakfast we didn't know that you now had to find a table yourself and also that it was like some sort of treasure hunt to obtain juice, tea and coffee and also toast, instead of these being served at one's table as before. Apart from the time element it is not conducive to good digestion having to walk to the other side of the restaurant and back up to four times during a meal. On the positive side we find the location of the hotel convenient, the views enjoyable, and the staff always pleasant and helpful.

The hotel was outdated- the tiles in our room (633) were not matching. It was as if there had been a repair but with different tiles. We were also not asked if we wanted to preauthorise a card to use in the restaurant for drinks. We were also not told the check out time at check in. Also three lifts for a hotel with as many rooms is not enough - we had to wait long times for lifts. When dining in the restaurant we ordered sweet potato fries and got regular- even although sweet potato came up on our receipt. Mistakes like that happen regularly but there was only a few other tables in the restaurant at the time. The breakfast is also hugely overpriced for what we received (no milk for the coffee, cold hot food and stale bread rolls. I also noticed there was not a smoothie available although it was advertised). I have worked in hospitality and hotels for 7 years and understand that issues can happen but the staff overall didn't seem to want to provide the 'wow' factor to the guest and merely wanted to complete their tasks. The location of the hotel is perfect however I would not stay again as overall my experience was disappointing.

« Very poor service and food »

In an almost empty restaurant the quality of service was very poor. One colleague received her meal when we had finished ours. Service at the bar was also slow and poor. One of your staff spilled red wine over a colleague and shattered a glass. Glass was under the table and no offer made to clean it up or move us elsewhere. It was not a warm day and the dining room had air con working. We almost needed coats. Breakfast was cold and we were almost first in the dining room at 8am (Saturday).

« Nice, but lacking »

First and foremost; the service at the Mercure is always on point. Friendly, professional and welcoming. However my recent stay lacked the quality of what I'd expect from a four-star hotel. The room (a privilege one thanks to my LeClub Gold Card!) was perfectly nice, but little faults did mar my stay somewhat. The rather fancy coffee machine wasn't working, which put a bit of a dampener on things when I woke up craving caffeine. Just a minor inconvenience,but nevertheless an annoying one when you've got certain expectations. Then there's the bathroom; whilst there was an array of Mercure branded toiletries provided (thank you!) - the sink was not working properly as the metallic sinkhole cover was wedged shut, so there was no way to drain water after its use. Having to brush your teeth in the shower isn't exactly a four-star experience.... ...and then there's the shower. It's a shower over bath kinda deal, but I've seen less grotty bathtubs in hostels. It was dirty, scratched and generally not something you'd want to step in to get clean. It's a perfectly nice hotel, but for four stars you'd expect a little more (or just a clean bathtub will do?)

« Nice room that was quiet and comfortable. »

Easy check-in with no queue. Hotel wasn't full and so lifts were fairly quick on this visit. Room was good, with special treat and free drink offered as part of my loyalty card membership. Comfortable nights sleep Breakfast was okay but not quite as good as other Accor Hotels such as Mercure Manchester North at Rochdale. Limited choice of cereals (no Weetabix) and some cooked items are poor (tinned mushrooms?). But perfectly adequate. Would be happy to book again

« Great, but with some reservations... »

Excellent room and facilities for the price; very clean and well presented in a great location to explore the city. All members of staff were warmly welcoming and very helpful throughout the stay. Some noise was generated by what may have been an airlocked water pipe - a metallic thudding noise around breakfast time, when guests were showering perhaps. Also my keycard failed on my first attempt to use it - card failure has happened on each of my stays, despite keeping cards away from stray magenetic fields (phone etc). Also, and this was not the fault of the hotel, some antiscocial guests in an adjoining room, talking and laughing very loudly and playing music past 3am. Reported this to hotel reception, who dealt with it very promptly and effectively - thank you.
