Our room window was next to some large bushes and upon entering the windows had been opened, to allow some air to flow, but the down side was a large number of insects in and flying around the room - we got rid of most and closed the window again - maybe bush can be cut back a bit. Breakfast staff looked rushed so a number of items were not replenished at all, pastries or took quite a time - possibly just a lack of staff on that day. Also, although maintenance was obviously needed, disappointed that the hotel pool/gym facilities were closed.

The hotel staff were friendly and welcoming. The bar and restaurant area was very nice. The rooms could do with a bit of updating. The downside of our stay was the swimming pool was far too cold to swim in due a "technical" problem. Also we made the mistake of booking via booking.com and not the hotel direct. The purpose of our stay was to visit Chester Zoo and the hotel actually advertise a package which includes dinner, bed and breakfast and zoo tickets for £149 (2 adults 1 child) we paid £110 for just bed and breakfast and were told we could not upgrade or change to the zoo package because we booked using booking.com.

I am so sorry that the pool was unavailable for you during your stay, we had severe difficulties getting this up to temperature and despite our best effects we had to keep this facility closed until it was safe to reopen and I'm so sorry for that. With regards to your booking with booking.com it would have depended on your booking type i.e. flexible or pre-paid booking and whether you were within the cancellation period of the booking terms. We could of sold the tickets to you for the zoo and added the package for dinner on but unfortunately this is unique directly to book with the hotel and not available as an add on package via a 3rd party booking agent. Overall fine. One night while I stayed at your hotel, the fire alarm went off by accident. First of all I got nothing to repay my inconvenience and I had to get up at 04:30 for work the next day. This made very tired and I couldn't do my job to the best of my ability. More alarmingly was the fact that the fire alarm was a very annoying constant noise. There were no flashing lights or anything whatsoever to notify the deaf or hard of hearing. Apart from this slight inconvenience I enjoyed my stay with you

The pool was freezing due to a valve been left open and was unusable the steam room was dripping some brown liquid from the ceiling and therefore unsanitary. The poor waitress serving our dinner which was booked in advance was alone in the restaurant and therefore service was slow{not her fault she was fantastic and worked really hard Her name is Emma}. Breakfast itself was fine however when we arrived to the dinning area we were told we had already eaten which of course we had not, we were then told to sit anywhere not shown to our table and were left to figure out the hot and cold sections for ourselves. After dinner we were just getting into bed when the fire alarm went off, we hurried out into the car park in the rain, there was no head count or register taken no one told us what was happening after about 15 minutes we were allowed back in no explanation was given apart from some member of your management team yelling at the bar staff " NO FREE DRINKS" a lovely attitude to paying customers. We chose your hotel for the 12 o'clock check out as avid swimmers we like to gym and swim after breakfast, however with the pool off the menu we checked out early. Good point the reception lady Paula was lovely and very helpful our room was ready 20 minutes early and was clean and comfortable.

Lovely hotel, well appointed. Good service. Breakfast needs to be looked at as there is really not much for anyone wanting a continental breakfast. Fried breakfast, although undoubtedly popular, is unhealthy. Cheese should be available. Menu said a selection of breads but there was only white or brown toasting bread.

We have put a number of initiatives in with the rooms and heat to try and reduce this in the building including leaving the fire doors open till late at night to reduce the temperature overall of the building, Fans in all the bedrooms and coolers in the corridors. . We have stayed at Mercure hotels before when in Europe but never in the UK. This hotel is very dated, although the bar and reception area have been refurbished, much of the hotel looks probably as it did in the 1970s/80s when it was built. Our second night here was terrible, our family room was directly above a loud function with DJ and live band. The music began at around 9pm and fortunately our children had fallen asleep by then.We spoke several times to the reception staff as it was impossible to get to sleep and eventually I slept in another room in a different part of the hotel whilst my husband was up until after 1am with the noise as another family room was not available. I'm unsure who thought that having the room directly above a loud function used by a family (who would not want to be out until 2am) was a sensible idea. The staff were very apologetic and eventually gave us a full refund. Its not easy having a long drive the next morning with very little sleep. In addition the swimming pool area was not particularly clean and the female changing rooms were much worse than any municipal swimming changing rooms I have ever been in with cracked flooring (lifting in several areas letting damp in?), showers with missing doors, broken lockers and generally dirty condition. Finally there is little information about the breakfast offered on the website, it doesn't say anywhere that kids eat free with paying adults and we didn't realise until we had gone down to the premier inn round the corner to have breakfast there. All in all a very poor experience and we won't be going again to a Mercure hotel.

I am so sorry that the room allocated for you was above the function room, generally we put guests of the function in those room but unfortunately on this occasion the hotel was fully booked and we were unable to move you. I am so so sorry that you were disturbed and I do appreciate whilst been given a full refund this wasn't necessarily the point and that you just wanted to sleep. We are in the process of looking at works with the Leisure facilities and certainly this area has been highlighted to prioritize and will including upgrading the equipment as well and the flooring in the changing rooms which is urgent. I am awaiting the quote for this so that I can give to our head office to review so that we can start moving forwards with improvements works. I do appreciate your comments and the opportunity to respond. I am not sure what your thoughts on returning are but certainly would like to look after you on a future occasion and to that end would like to offer you a complimentary nights stay on a future occasion. « Mixed feelings; room fine and staff pleasant but some practical issues that need improving. »

The room was fine, aaaand cleaning/housekeeping very good. Reception staff pleasant and helpful. The Sat evening meal wasn’t great, the hummus was tasteless, don’t think any tahini had been used in its making, and the staff need training so that waiting staff don’t ignore guests who are looking to be seated - even if they’re busy they need to give eye contact and assure you that someone will be there to help in a minute. There was as a silly response to the request for 2 scoops of ice ream as a dessert. The menu offers 1 or 3! I ended up with 2 separate ice cream cones in 2 sundae glasses - and I didn’t even want a wafer cone. A dish and spoon was what I’d expected. I ended up spearing the ice cream boule on a fork. I was really fed up with the pool being out of action on Monday, and although the spa staff were lovely about it, someone hadn’t done the maintenance properly for the problem to have arisen. I had specifically chosen the hotel for being able to have an early morning swim before breakfast and was already disappointed at the late opening time on Sunday, 10 not allowing for exercise before breakfast, so losing the Monday too meant that our stay ceased to be what we’d planned and made for a disappointing experience overall.

In general the stay was good however as we stayed for 8 days we found the clothes storage very poor, no drawers or shelves , just 6 hangers, so living from a suitcase was difficult. In addition the windows only opened about 4 cm so the room was very stuffy.

Upon arrival was acknowledged with a warm welcoming smile. All Staff were great especially Craig breakfast Manager and Paula Reception. Pool was great for us both and the children. Bar Staff were great and prices reasonable. Loved the Voucher for the little ones milk n cookie before bed. The Breakfast was delicious and a great variety. Our only problem was the Dinner we ordered Humous with crispy bread strips it came tasting of curry powder never tasted anything like it it was vile. Server took it away and replaced it with another one which wasn’t much better and came with 3 cold pita bread cut in half. Felt like it was just thrown together. Also the Poached Pear for Dessert was freezing cold (never had this before it has always been served hot) I did speak to Craig breakfast Manager and Paula from Reception about this. I was informed this would be passed on to the General Manager who would speak to us. (been home a week still nothing). Next night did not go for Dinner because of the night before so walked along to the Pub as you turn right onto main road which was unfortunately closed down. Went back to Hotel thinking it’s our last resort and low and behold it was finished as it was 8.50pm. Nothing for us 2 Adults and a 7 yr old to eat only pizza delivered to the room or chocolate and crisp to purchase from the charity table. This problem with Dinner and the fact nobody did speak to us regarding it did leave an unpleasant tinge to our few days there. But we are the type of people who do know hiccups do happen. Things do slip through the knot. So we will be going back to try again.

I was sorry that I was not given the information you have supplied below with regards to the feedback for dinner. I have been working all the time and pretty much have been around for all dinner services so I'm really so to read that you were not satisfied with your dinner as I would have made some corrective actions for you immediately. I completely understand your point when you state that you thought I would come and speak with you and how dissapointed you were. I am always talking to our guests and would have done so at the time. I am not sure why they didn't get me when you were having dinner. Our dinner last orders for the restaurant is 9pm and we served bar menu until 9.30pm and then pizzas after this time. I am really sorry that you arrived late and were dissatisfied that we couldn't serve you any other meals. If I could offer you a complimentary dinner on a return stay as a gesture of goodwill and by way of an apology. This offer is valid for a period of six months and is subject to availability. The poached pear dish is served cold but i do understand your point as it comes straight out of refrigerators for service. Only issue I had was when I used to go and have breakfast in the restaurant as a buffet, there was one gentleman with glasses and he wears a suit, he was a manager or something, slim bloke, he was over friendly as every time I was eating breakfast he would come over and talk for a long period off time, were I could not enjoy my breakfast, I was not very impressed with that bloke

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for three nights. The general areas were good but the rooms were basic - no safe or fridge. Also the room was very hot, although we used the dehumidifier/fan to lower the temperature it was to little effect. My biggest complaint was the pillows - it was like sleeping on a brick and it was hard to get comfortable. The breakfast was good with a fair selection, but no fruit yoghurt - not everyone likes black currents (too tart). We had dinner one night which was good but a bit pricey.

I will get the pillows looked at in the room you stayed, we should have two firm and two soft pillows per rooms so I will ask our housekeeping team to look into this. We generally are now receiving good comments regarding our breakfast and thank you for your feedback, we do have a full selection of fruits and breakfast to suit all different tastes and i do appreciate your point regarding fruit yoghurt however this is not a specified item we have as part of our company breakfast specifications. « Disturbance in next room »

We were pleased with most aspects however for a privilege room it still seemed a little small. The only complaint was that between 23.30 and 03.00 there was a disturbance in the next room in the form of raised voices, crying and banging on the wall. On reflection I should have reported it but at the time I didn’t want to get involved and hoped it would stop. Sadly it meant a poor nights sleep for myself and my fiancé.
