« Room disappointing but restaurant very good »

Staff were helpful, public areas very comfortable and dinner in the restaurant was excellent. However, we were disappointed with the room, a long walk from reception and we found the room was a little “tired”. There was no hotel/local information available in the room, no air con, although there was a fan, which was noisy. There were no toiletries except for 2 bottles of shampoo in the bathroom, a notice warning you to take care when in the bath and if you wanted a rubber mat to go to reception, surely one could have been left available. Overall although disappointed with the room the friendliness of the staff and the standard of food served in the restaurant made our stay enjoyable

I was very disappointed with how run down and dirty - the rooms and leisure facilities were, toilets/changing rooms smelled of urine. The breakfast variety is very restricted; staff use same clothe to wipe spillage on restaurant floor and the tables.

I always like to be greeted by friendly people when I stay in a hotel and the Mercury certainly had that. The first impression one gets of the place was a clean, well run and impressive appearance. The room was good, nice and clean and welcoming. Breakfast was good with attentive service. Wou Would I use this hotel again? Yes. Would I recommend it to others? Yes. It is very conveniently situated being about five minutes off the M4 and within about ten minutes drive of the city centre.

No draws to put clothes in 1 skinny wardrobe for 6 tops,bed was very comfortable. The toilet paper holder was in wrong place l banged my elbow each time l turned round to get paper.could do with a grab handle by sink as for us old folk who have trouble getting of low toilet pans. No biscuits with coffee tray.FOOD BASIC waiters need training as they walk infront of you when coming to eat.they clear table without asking if you need it.some knives & milk missing off table l was given a second hand jug of milk off a tray of dirty dishes,soup cold,eggs rubbery,toaster broken toast does not pop up .where's heath & saftey. Theres a hole under carpet on raise platform area near middle which you can drop down with your hell,NOT GOOD FOR OLD PEOPLE. When sitting on toilet & looking at wash basin the over flow hole is dirty. No Grap Rail in shower.The reception seemed well organised when we came in on first day as for key envelopes. THEY did offer to get a set of draws the next day,no good for unpacking when you arrive as we had to live out of siutcase.When you order a dish of menu it was brought to the table, but not on another day l was told l need to get from display area ,It WAS not there l had to knock on kitchen door only to be told l had to order it.there was an thinish older lady put on ,on our last day to help train young girls of which one was a school girl which could not of had much training as when she gave you a SOUP spoon she held it by to bowl end & not the handle ,I think you need a visit from health & Saftey inspectors. Front gardens near but gardens viewed from our room were messy pruning the shrubs would help. I hope you get these complaints sorted for the sake of hotel & guests. Please can you reply

The Mercure is a little way out of the city centre but was ok for onwards access to our next day business meeting. My room was spacious and adequate but had only 1 chair. Note there is no lift, though only 2 floors. We had dinner in the restaurant, which was also fine and of reasonable value. Swimming pool closed during our stay. Nothing to fault but also nothing that we could say was above the average for the price paid

To report the positive first, you are fortunate to have a great team at the hotel, very client orientated and clearly highly motivated, invidious to single out just one, but would note the guy in charge of restaurant on Tuesday evening and again at breakfast yesterday- really positive! However, the bathroom of room 245 was certainly not great, probably the worst I've seen in a long time and I spend many nights a year in hotels and B&B. There was rust around the bath taps, damaged, rotting wood panel at base of toilet, a distinctly wonky flush and a three way crack in the handbasin - seriously uninviting I'm afraid and not 4* by any stretch of the imagination.

Incredibly noisy, was repeatedly woken up during the night by drunken people returning, this went on until 4.40am. We ended up having to call the night porter to ask people to be quiet and it appeared that some weren’t even staying at the hotel.
