« Rooms on the top floor »

We attended a lovely wedding in lovely surroundings but were very disappointed in our room. It looked lovely and seemed to have all the facilities but there was no opening window and it was a very hot day. We turned what we thought was the air conditioning down in the early evening so that it would cool down by bedtime. However this was not an air conditioning unit and our room was 25 degrees Celsius when we returned to go to bed. The staff on site were very helpful and brought two fans when I complained about the heat and we did eventually sleep. I believe that rooms with no opening window and no air conditioning are not fit for purpose when the temperature is high! Unable to complain at checkout as long queue to checkout and only one person on the desk!

« No staff means no customer service »

Had 2 rooms, one twin was upgraded to the main house. Air con broken and windows sealed! Hotel aware and said would fix, however didn’t. On check out I asked for the complaints procedure and was told look on the website. Not great after a very hot night!!

« Atmospheric beautiful old building »

Loved staying here in the old hall rooms. Unique building and lovely grounds. If you are going to stay in the old part, take an electric fan as the rooms are ridiculously hot though with either no or barely working air con, and no opening windows. Other than that, lovely rooms.

« Pleasant setting but lack of attention to detail »

Service was not great. Drinks served at the bar were never in the correct glasses and no Baileys available. Coffee machine was out of order. Our room was serviced and the balcony door was left open. We retuned to a room full of flies. Coffee was not replenished. The sauna was the hottest I have ever been in, apparently another guest got blisters from using it.

« Nice hotel, terrible breakfast and cofee, no adapter for UK electricity, The quality of the iron was very low »

The hotel and the atmosphere was really nice. The quality of the breakfast was terrible: - The scrambled egg has no taste, very low quality of food - There was no vegetables only tomato - The taste of the coffee was terrible, very low quality I asked several times for adapter for electricity at the reception desk. Within 1 week they was not able to manage one for me. That is not acceptable. (The receptionists were very kind) The quality of the iron was terrible. The metal par was dirty and it was not functional. I was not able to use that because it would have made damages in my expensive shirts As a new frequently traveller to UK I will try to avoid the booking to your hotel again. This Mercure hotel does not reach the standards of other mercure hotels like in Germany and France are.

« Nice venue and grounds »

Nice location, venue and grounds. Food was to a good standard also. My girlfriend and I did enjoy the hot stone massages. However, advertising as a spa is highly disappointing. No jacuzzi, sauna broken, steam room quite small and the swimming pool had a used plaster in it which was extremely unhygienic. It is a shame as there is plenty of area to potentially have amazing spa facilities.

« Nice hotel, gorgeous surroundings, but the staff are not great »

We stayed for 3 nights and enjoyed our visit. The room was fine, although would benefit from air con as it was very hot. Breakfast was pretty good (we didn’t eat in the evening as the prices were very high), but the staff were not very welcoming - we really felt that they didn’t want to be there, which is a shame as it could be a great asset to the Accor family with a happier team.

« Mr Robert B. »

The hotel and grounds are beautiful ,I recommended it to friends after last years visit ,however what has happened to the catering at this hotel ,set menus with no grill options in the restaurant ,£15 in the bar for fish and chips with a portion the size of a FISH FINGER - a very small piece of steak -£26,afternoon tea with sandwiches that were hard and stale and a chef who claims his fish portion was because he chose the best fillets - then obviously liked to over cook them .I was frankly embarrassed by the catering at Walton Hall especially as I had told friends that last year it was so good ,my advice sack the chef and review the menus and the rules on how they work -we had to eat in the bar both nights as some of our party members did not want the set restaurant menu and we were told that the grill /bar menu was only available in the bar -complete with small wobbly tables. A Mystery Shopper from your company needs to visit Walton Hall urgently and sort this out before long term damage is done. I love the place and hope the catering can be sorted again as next time will be last chance.

« Comfortable but a few draw backs »

The checking in process was slow but the hotel is situated in a very pretty part of the countryside with lovely views. The service in the hotel is good but the rooms are tired and in need of refreshing. The rooms are very basically furnished and do not have air conditioning which is very unusual for a hotel of this calibre. The rooms are very basically furnished, lacking pictures with just plain walls. The food was of a good quality and the old chapel and original "Hall" are delightful. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. So, in short, the location, service and food quality are good but the bedrooms are very tired and need upgrading and check in needs to be more efficient.

« NIce hotel but some issues! »

I have stayed at the hotel on three occasions and the first two were far different form the last. I have to say the staff at reception always seems pressured, either because they are on their own checking in a lot of people, or there were no keys to hand out etc. I have always randomly been allocated a room in the main house and I appreciate this may have been lucky on my part. This time I was given a top floor room above reception with no window. It was so hot I could not stay in it. I was moved but had to move again due to it not being available for my second night stay. When allocated a new room it had not been cleaned, the toilet was unflushed, the bed not changed and the carpet not vacuumed (there were toe nails on the floor). I rarely complain but could not stay in the room. The receptionist was very good and resolved the issue and offered me a drink but was under pressure due to the lack of key cards.

« Stunning Hotel and grounds - but what has happened to the Food ? »

I stayed at Walton Hall exactly a year previous to this visit and thought the entire stay and service was brilliant ,great room ,good restaurant and bar and good food .However what a difference a year makes in catering .The hotel and grounds are still a joy to behold but the food and portion sizes an absolute joke .The restaurant now has only set menu dishes on and you cant order anything from the bar menu in the restaurant - this was a problem if some of your party doesn't like the set dishes .This happened on Saturday night ,so we eat in the bar and the dishes we ordered were missing the mushrooms which we had to ask about before being told they had ran out of them ,also no fish left as some of our company requested .We gave the kitchen the benefit of the doubt as it was busy .However on the much quieter Sunday night - the restaurant menu was again a set menu of ROASTS -Turkey ,Beef and Gammon - more a Sunday lunch menu !So back to the bar again as our request was again turned down for our company to eat from the Bar Grill menu in the restaurant .This time the bar menu had fish on so two of us ordered it (Fish & Chips as stated on the menu )- what we got was a well fired piece of fish the size of an average FISH FINGER - we complained and were given a story that the chef picks the best fillets for customers - this was rubbish as the fish must be serving many different people at this size ,we were eventually given another similar sized piece of overcooked over priced at £15 fish.I personally had Steak which again seemed smaller than listed on the menu - altogether both nights were a food disaster -unlike last year which was excellent (when like any other hotel there was a grill menu available in the restaurant )My Sister and her friend also had afternoon tea on the Sunday afternoon which most of which was sent back - the sandwiches were held together by a skewer and were hard and curled up at the edges due to lying about in open air obviously before being delivered .WHY OH WHY is a fantastic ,beautiful hotel like this being destroyed by its catering - especially its menus and its CHEF ,this mans work needs investigated and if not improved he needs removed .I would suggest a large professional organisation like Accor needs to MYSTERY SHOP Walton Hall and sort these problems .I will be back as I love the hotel and setting but next time will be a last chance as im sure many people feel - after all I recommended Walton Hall and felt terrible about it.

« How can such an Hotel with a fabulous restaurant have such a mediocre pool and spa and housekeeping team with too much to do? »

Overall very good, but a room that contained a chair with a wobbly leg that was dangerous and a light shade so shaky it fell on me in the night did not fill me with confidence. Also the housekeeping team seemed to camp outside our door from early morning but did not try to clean the room until 3.30pm when I was sleeping fast. Having said not to worry about cleaning but could the tea making facilities be replenished, this was not done and we had to ask for fresh milk instead. The pool does not have adequate lounging facilities, we were not informed that lockers needed a £1 coin and so our belongings were not secure, the staff could not be bothered to stop their conversations to engage with us and the towels were flung at us. Thank goodness we did not have time to book a treatment. The restaurant and food is first class

The reception Staff were very helpful, however there was a problem with the hotel software on arrival making things difficult for the front of house team. Our Room however was a disaster, we found the following: Badly damaged and stained carpet in 3 locations, the windows had cobwebs on the inside and were sealed, the aircon was not working - so not sufficient ventilation as required by law. The bathroom toilet roll holder, chest of drawers, Shower door and TV were all broken ( we informed the hotel who said they would send maintenance up to take a look but nobody came. The walls were damaged, the shower waste has NEVER been cleaned. I have photos of all the issues and shared them with Jonny on reception who was again very sorry and helpful. I had paid extra for an upgrade to celebrate my 50th Birthday and the Hotel fell well short of my expectations

« Bad Service and staff »

We were not informed of the gate closure which our Sat Nav (and the website) directed us to so when we arrives, we were sent on a detour for 40 minutes to get to the correct entrance. We tried calling the hotel a number of times- not a single person answered. Arrival, we were greeted with a huge queue at check in so decided to go to the bar for a drink prior to checking in. The staff there were rude, clueless if im honest and slow. We had to remind them about one of our orders 10 minutes later. We took it in turns queuing to check in which in total took over 45 minutes- the queue curled around the reception! The next morning, the breakfast served in the Mansion wing where we stayed was horrendous- the breakfast was barely cooked, barely hot, flies covered the cheeses and meats out and tables were covered in left over food, plates and dirty cutlery. I didnt see any staff at all during breakfast clearing at all. Overall, a very unpleasant stay.
