Good apartment stay

TripAdvisor rating 4.0/5

ninhursag TripAdvisor review

The people working here could not be faulted - very friendly and welcoming. The place itself also presented well, with the room clean although in some areas a little worn. So, location - not bad. Outside the CBD, but frankly we are talking Adelaide so it's not that far out. It is basically an apartment block - no restaurant associated with it, so do not expect to be able to get dinner or room service, or for that matter a 'welcome drink' glass of wine if you are an Accor member. I did get some chocolate and two bottles of water, as well as a handwritten welcome note, so that was nice. On check in they did say that they normally do not service the rooms every day, but could arrange to do so if I wanted - and as I was staying for only three nights I said not to bother. Wifi - works, but not super fast (under 2Mbps down, 0.04 Mbps up). Maybe it was having a seniors moment whilst I was there, but be aware you may end up needing to use your mobile data for anything more than basic email. I had a room on the fifth floor - nice and large with two separate bedrooms either side of a lounge area, as well as a long balcony with some chairs and a table. As you walked into the room, the lounge was directly in front and to the left was the kitchen and to the right the combined laundry & bathroom. For a home away from home, this worked well. You can walk out the back and you are behind a Woolworths that is inside a small shopping area. There are a number of other shops in the centre from a cafe to BWS to a chemist - I wandered down and got some supplies from Woolworths to cover my dinner/breakfasts for the three nights I was staying. Outside the centre there was a restaurant or two and if feeling active, a McDonalds and other take away options about a 10 minute walk away. The kitchen had a full size fridge. It was clean and worked well, but there were some cracks on the inside. There was a bracket stuck to the outside of both the freezer and fridge compartment doors where no doubt they used to be connected to the external wooden door panel - but it would have been a little weird as the single wooden door would have meant when you opened the wooden door, both the freezer and fridge doors would open. Maybe that's why they separated them, or maybe it came from a different apartment. Anyhow, it meant that to access the fridge or freezer you need to open the large wooden door and then reach in the crack between the wall and the side of the fridge to grab the door and pull. Inside the fridge was a collection of those single shot UHT milk containers you could use when making tea or coffee, and speaking of which there was a nespresso pod machine with four unmarked pods (two gold, two brown - maybe decaf and normal? No idea.). The kitchen had a small induction top, oven & microwave oven, and dishwasher. The stove top did not work initially, until I found the separate power switch on the wall that turned it on. There was an ok collection of cooking implements, from knives to pans, chopping boards and a small pot. Plus plates, cups, glasses etc. Also some powder for the dishwasher, and liquid for hand washing. The laundry area had a combined washer/dryer with two small packs of powder. The shower was super powerful - had one of those spray heads with a handle, but it could be moved up fairly high so no issue for taller people. From a noise perspective the room was fairly quiet. I did find one morning there was some noise from trucks outside possibly collecting rubbish, and also there was a random high pitched squeak I could not track down for a while - initially I though it might have been from the lift but later I suspected it may have been a baby bird outside somewhere. I should also note that the bathroom had an exhaust fan that automatically turned on when the light switch was turned on, and then was on a timer so a few minutes after the light went off the fan would also eventually go off. That tricked me for a while! I didn't hear much noise from other residents, but I suspect many of the rooms near me were vacant. Issues for me: The shower in the bathroom was nice and large, but set down the back of the narrow bathroom with the nearest light being a fairly dim LED in the ceiling about 2m away - meaning that it was quite dark. Speaking of dark, the apartment has floor to ceiling windows facing out onto the balcony. All the windows had long roller blinds - opaque privacy blinds in the lounge area and block out versions in the bedrooms. Big plus for block out blinds in the bedrooms *but* they did not cover the width of the windows so let light in around the edges. Personally, as much as huge windows look great, for bedrooms I am a big fan of smaller windows that are easier to manage light. The bedrooms had 'barn style' roller doors which are space efficient, but if you are a little weak might be difficult to move due to their mass. The bed (it had two of course, but I only tried the one) mattress was a little too firm for me, as in fact was the couch in front of the tv in the living area. The dishwasher was a drawer style machine hidden behind a wooden panel. The first time I used it I could hear some weird rattling and the dishes did not come out very clean - I discovered that some pieces of the dishwasher plate tray were loose on the inside and being hit by & blocking the lower spray arm. I collected and clipped most of those back where they were supposed to be, and popped the rest into the cutlery basket, and that was fixed. It just came with two sachets of powder, so no rinse aid, meaning glasses did come out with some water stains afterwards. The biggest issue I had though was on the last evening I put the machine through a cycle, and the morning of checkout the door refused to unlatch. As it was behind a wooden panel there were no buttons to press to try to unlock it. I found the power point for it and turned it off for a while, but it still would not unlock. That meant that not only couldn't I put the clean dishes back into the cupboards, but I could not retrieve a personal container I had put in there to clean. It was not an expensive container, but was a little disappointing to have to leave it behind. I know that I have noted a number of negative things, but think of those as being more areas that could be improved. Keep in mind that there was a lot that was positive about my stay so overall I will say that I was happy at the Watson. If I am staying in Adelaide again for more than a couple of days, I would contemplate coming back - I do like having the full kitchen for making actual meals rather than going out all the time. The location is excellent with it being near the CBD and so close to a supermarket, and of course the staff were very pleasant and welcoming.

The room was great, view and access was fantastic. The greeting was flat and advice was vague and incomplete. We had to rewash dishes, clean the vacuum before use.
