HEIMAT

The restaurant only serves the best that german, austrian and swiss cuisine has to offer. From the North Sea to the Alps. Seasonality is top priority here. The corner stone of the culinary concept is a three-course menu - the so - called Herzstück menu.

My 13-year-old son and I had a wonderful stay at 25hours Bikini in Berlin last year, so we chose 25hours on our first trip to Hamburg. The location was perfect for us and we love the modern casual luxury and boutique concept. Unfortunately this hotel disappointed us despite helpful staff and accomplished design. The hotel's facilities immediately seem very appealing and generous - free minibar, free sauna package, free tea in the common living areas, where you are invited to "hang out", an exhibition of modern typewriters with an invitation to write a letter and let the reception send it , chill out room with vinyls, but it seems more like form over substance and several of the facilities did not work or worked poorly. The minibar consisted of two bottles of water, a single coke, chocolate bar and two beers. Nothing was filled up during the stay. Calling it a free minibar is quite nice. No option to heat water for tea or coffee in the room (which we really missed), no coffee in the lounge or reception either, only tea letters, but on the other hand no cups / mugs freely available. Here, a Nespresso machine (or similar) would really have been a nice thing. Twice we tried to ask for "the free sauna package" (which apparently consisted of slippers and a bathrobe) and both times we were told that it was "sold out" and that we could just use the sauna anyway and use the towels that was in the sauna area. The sauna area is designed so that you step straight into a common changing room, and both times we tried, we - my 13-year-old son and I - entered among fully undressed people in dense steam, while we ourselves were fully clothed. The fact that the light didn't work either (which, of course, is an accident), and the area was therefore dark and steamy, didn't make it any better, and we felt somewhat out of place. Although we are used to the German textile-free sauna environments, we missed a separate changing area. Both times there were only piles of used towels, no fresh ones, so it could be tightened up a bit here. The room was fun and charmingly decorated, but still had some shortcomings. The beds - which are nice and medium at other 25hours hotels (eg Bikini in Berlin), were here very hard and uncomfortable. The duvets were of different weights - a summer duvet on one side and a thicker one on the other side. Strange, Not super good quality, but we are also connoisseurs in that area. The pillows also a little sloppy. The TV had the usual German synchronized channels and BCC / CNN, but unfortunately not Netflix or the option of Chrome cast, which I think should be standard now. Of the toiletries, I missed hair conditioner, which I also think should be standard for a boutique hotel of the class to which 25Hours belongs. I had to buy it in the delicious but expensive shop at the reception for the tidy sum of 28 euros. Overall, the indent is that 25hours is really well thought out and executed with great ingenuity and design joy, but unfortunately at the expense of functionality and comfort and savings. However, fill up the mini-bar every time there is cleaning, at least with water bottles, change to a Smart TV with Netflix and HBO pre-installed, have bathrobes and slippers in the room, several pillows available (pillow menu), give guests the opportunity to make coffee and maintain your exhibition in the lounge area so that functionality and usability follow the design.

Super hotel with friendly staff and lovely rooms. Always a great experience to arrive and the staff seem interested and genuine. The rooms are spacious and well decorated. The beds are good and the hotel is in a great location. The restaurant and breakfast are great and highly recommended. The bar in Altes Hafenamt is a must go.

Positives: the rooms was spacious and functional, including a free mini bar which was a great touch. Breakfast was great quality. Mini tea pots with a varied selection of quality loose leaf tea was the highlight for me. I also had dinner at the hotel restaurant which was very good. From the negatives I would mention one thing - no kettle, tea or coffee making facilities in the room. Don't know if this would bother many people, but if I can't make myself a hot drink in the morning in the room, I probably wouldn't stay there again. I would suggest the hotel fix that oversight as otherwise it's a good value functional hotel that could be really good.

Great location, intention and restaurant - but the hotel part doesn’t really deliver

I enjoyed my 1 night stay at 25 hours Hotel Hamburg Hafencity, in particular the restaurant. Still, it won’t be my favourite hotel in Hamburg, I’m afraid. To start with the positives, the location is great (one can walk to and from most places), and the restaurant (Heimat) is excellent. The service in Heimat was great, and their Veltliner and crispy sugar snap pea soup was the best food I had in Hamburg. The hotel is also very stylish, both in the common areas and the rooms. However, the rooms are designed to please the eye but are not particularly practical or comfortable. The worst part was the overhang over the bed, where I banged my head numerous times (I am sure that happened often on tiny, crowded ships, but there was truly no need to recreate the experience in modern times on land). A corner of the room was just locked off by the door of a decorative cabinet - but that would have been useful space for storage. The bed was also not particularly comfortable, and the construction work next-door was very loud. Add that the loudspeaker in the room did not work, that there was no water kettle for tea, and that the floor in the shower was dangerously slippery, I think you get the picture that design went before function and comfort in this property. Great plus for the sauna on the 6th floor, and a solid minus for having a less experienced member of front desk staff alone on duty during check-out when the hotel was fully booked the night before (not her fault, obviously). I think they would deserve a 3,5 but ended up with 3 since I did not even get to talk to staff during check-out.
